Lydiard Park is a beautiful historic estate on the western edge of Swindon, with the Palladian House, Church and Walled Garden, set in 260 acres of parkland. The children's play area, Cafe & Tea Rooms, events and education programmes make Lydiard Park a great destination for a family day out.

Lovely park, nice House, expensive walled garden and car park”

Whilst the park is free, there is a parking charge for cars, which was disappointingly expensive at £4 per day but the season tickets at £45 represent slightly better value if you're local. The price for entry to the house and walled garden is £6.50 whilst the garden was £4 on its own; unfortunately there's no separate ticket available for the house.

Lydiard House is a Grade I listed Palladian house and was home to the St John family for more than 500 years. Access is only permitted to the restored ground floor state apartments of the house, which displays a lot of the original family furnishings, together with many portraits and photographs of the St John family. There are also a couple of "models" depicting members of the family, whilst the dressing room has a few exhibits in relation to the first Lady Diana Spencer. I particularly thought the first and second world war exhibits were well done; very informative.

The walled garden is accessed via the café and clearly in mid April it wasn't at its best and was smaller than I had expected.

I didn't have time to explore the 260 acres of the park in full, but the Plunge Pool and Great Dam Wall did look very impressive; as did the collection of ponies near the car park.

Lovely for dog walks but parking overprice

I love this area for walking my dog but am reluctant to go often as the parking is extortionate - £2 for half an hour onwards makes for a very expensive dog walk. Otherwise, the park is beautiful and well kept. The coffee shop and jungle parc are also nice touches.

Park visit

I absolutely love this place and we used to come here every week as a family. Unfortunately, since the parking charges came in we've been put off coming here. I don't mind contributing to the upkeep of such a wonderful place, but the hassle, expense and cheek of the parking metres have meant we've had to find a new place...

I love Lydiard Park,

I love Lydiard Park, and have many happy memories here. I was disappointed to see parking charges in place but I suppose that's how everything is going now. It was always a huge draw of the park, there was no rush and no charges, it made us spend more when we were there! Still a great place to be
